But these overlooked wetlands are rich in biodiversity and play a vital role in fighting climate change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To shed light on the hidden value of peatlands, poets <strong>Matt Sowerby<\/strong> (UK) and <strong>Kimchi Lai <\/strong>(Malaysia) teamed up with filmmakers <strong>Studio 91 Media <\/strong>and <strong>Factual TV<\/strong>. Over two immersive day trips in their respective countries, each pair of artists explored their chosen peatland\u2014writing poetry and capturing footage inspired by the land and the people protecting it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The result<\/strong>: a series of powerful spoken word films celebrating the beauty, biodiversity, and cultural significance of peatlands in the UK and Malaysia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Experience the results at <strong>two exhibitions<\/strong> in <strong>Malaysia<\/strong> and <strong>one exhibition<\/strong> in the <strong>UK<\/strong>\u2014to experience the poetry and watch all 10 films. You can also join our <strong>online Q&amp;A session<\/strong> to ask questions and learn more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Supported by the British Council\u2019s <em>Connections Through Culture<\/em> grant, the project seeks to challenge perceptions and reframe how these landscapes are understood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Word from the Project Supporter<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201c<em>Malaysia is one of 17 mega diverse regions in the world. It is known for its old rainforests but there are many other smaller ecosystems that contribute to Malaysia\u2019s biodiversity. Peatlands and mangroves are such fragile ecosystems and they deserve our attention and protection. Science and technology are not the only tools we have to respond to threats such as climate change or resource extraction. The arts help us communicate around the issues and touch people in ways science or technology can\u2019t.&nbsp; Projects such as \u2018Peat on Earth\u2019 demonstrate that arts can play a role in addressing global challenges, and we are proud to be supporting such initiatives. Through our \u2018Connections Through Culture\u2019 and \u2018Human-Nature\u2019 programmes, we want to encourage artists and creatives to collaborate on projects that raise awareness on global challenges such as inclusion and climate change.<\/em>\u201d &#8211; <strong>Florence Lambert, Head of Arts and Creative Industries, British Council Malaysia<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Connections Through Culture<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britishcouncil.my\/programmes\/arts\/work\/culture-connects\/ctc\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.britishcouncil.my\/programmes\/arts\/work\/culture-connects\/ctc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Connections Through Culture<\/a> (CTC) Grant fosters cultural collaboration between the Asia-Pacific region and the United Kingdom, supporting artists and organisations at various stages of partnership.
