Sahabat Gambut Asli Temuan (SGAT), or Temuan Indigenous Friends of the Peatland, was formed in 2015 and originally called ‘Friends of KLNFR.’ It was renamed SGAT in 2021 upon official registration with the Registry of Societies Malaysia. SGAT also serves as a collaborative platform for government agencies, corporations, NGOs, and local communities to protect the forest.
SGAT’s dedication to forest protection has led to the creation of numerous green jobs including community patrolling, tree supply for revegetation, canal blocking, fire prevention, and other related activities.
Comprising villagers from Kampung Orang Asli Bukit Cheeding and Kampung Orang Asli Pulau Kempas, SGAT members were trained and empowered by the Global Environment Centre (GEC) to assist in forest protection, conservation, and fire prevention. The group works closely with the Selangor Forestry Department and other partners in ongoing efforts to restore and safeguard KLNFR.
Community Consent
SGAT agreed to take part in the films, reflecting their involvement in the rehabilitation of KLNFR. Factual TV followed the Free, Prior, and Informed Consent (FPIC) process to ensure the community’s rights and participation were fully respected. After production, the films were screened in the village to obtain final consent from the community.
